MP4 is the most common video format on phones and the web, and every modern browser decodes it natively. GifCraft reads the MP4 locally, grabs the frames you choose and encodes them as an animated GIF with a palette tuned to your clip.

Why the GIF is bigger than the MP4
MP4 (H.264) only stores what changes between frames and uses millions of colours cheaply. GIF, a 1989 format, stores each frame with LZW compression and at most 256 colours. A 1 MB MP4 can easily become a 5–10 MB GIF. GifCraft fights that with frame differencing (unchanged pixels become transparent, which compress to almost nothing) and a shared palette.
When to keep it as MP4
If the destination accepts video — Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, Telegram — a silent looping MP4 looks better and is far smaller. Use the GIF to MP4 tool for that direction.
Questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. GifCraft decodes and encodes everything inside your browser tab using the canvas and WebCodecs APIs. Your file never leaves your device, which is also why there is no sign-up and no watermark.
Does it keep the sound?
No. The GIF format has no audio track. If you need sound, keep the clip as MP4.
How do I make the GIF smaller?
Lower the width, lower the fps, trim it shorter, or set a size target in the Size panel and let GifCraft pick colours and dimensions for you.
