GIF to WebP

Animated WebP supports millions of colours and smooth transparency, and is usually far smaller than GIF. Every current browser displays it, which makes it a strong choice for websites.

GIF to WebP in three steps

  1. Drop the GIF (or a video).

  2. Set quality and size.

  3. Make the WebP and download.

Where WebP works (and where it doesn’t)

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 14+ all display animated WebP, so it is great for web pages and WordPress. Chat apps are patchier: Discord shows WebP but some apps show only the first frame. For chat, GIF or MP4 is still the safe choice. Encoding WebP needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox; Safari can display WebP but cannot create it.
