How GifCraft makes a GIF in your browser

When you drop a video, your browser’s own decoder plays it into an off-screen canvas, and GifCraft grabs a frame at each step of your chosen frame rate. Every frame then passes through the same pipeline: crop and rotate, resize, colour filters, text, background removal.

Encoding is where GIF gets interesting. The format allows only 256 colours per frame, so GifCraft samples your frames and builds one shared palette that suits the whole clip. It compares each frame with the one before and writes pixels that did not change as transparent, which LZW compression squeezes to almost nothing. If you set a size target, it re-encodes with fewer colours, then a smaller width, then fewer frames, until the file fits.

The guide on how to make a GIF has hands-on explainers for the palette and for frame timing — drag a slider and watch a sky band into stripes, or see why a 100 fps GIF plays at 10 fps. On ahaboo, you can move through explainers like why the Moon has its phases, how a leaf turns light into energy, and how US income tax brackets add up.

Questions

Is GifCraft really free?

Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no export limit. Because your own browser does the work, GifCraft has no per-file server costs to pass on to you.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. Files are opened, edited and encoded inside your browser tab. The only things that ever reach a server are the short text you type for AI caption ideas or the AI generator prompt — never your files.

What can I turn into a GIF?

Videos (MP4, MOV, WebM), existing GIFs, and still images (PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF). Several images become a frame-by-frame animation; a single image can be animated with a zoom, pan or float motion.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. GifCraft is designed for phones first. On iPhone, pick a clip from Photos; on Android, from Gallery or Files. Very long 4K clips may be slow on older phones — trim to a few seconds first.

How do I make a GIF for Discord or Slack?

Open the Size & presets panel and pick Discord emoji, Discord avatar, Slack emoji or another preset. GifCraft crops, resizes and compresses until the GIF is under that platform’s limit.

Can I export something other than GIF?

Yes: MP4 (for Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp), animated WebP (for websites) or every frame as PNG in a ZIP.
